The Syin-lu Social Welfare Foundation said that under the new donation scheme, which was launched on May 21, NT$5 (US$0.15) will be donated each time participating smartphone users visit designated enterprises.
Users will first have to download the required App, which is free, in order to check in at the shops, the foundation said.
There are six participating businesses, most of which are located in the greater Taipei area, the foundation said. They are two coffee shops, a language learning institute, a hair salon, a dance studio, and a mattress store.
Customers are not required to make a purchase but interaction with the staff of the enterprises is encouraged, the foundation said.
So far, there have been 769 check-ins at Parisienne coffee shop and the response has been good, according to Karen Shen, a public relations officer at the foundation.
"This is the first time that local charity groups are using App technology for donations," she said.
"We came up with the plan because our donations had dropped 30 percent in April," she said. "Most private donations were directed to Japan after the tsunami there in March," she said.
However, the system is in an experimental stage and has encountered some teething problems.
"Nearly one week after we started the program, we received feedback from the participating enterprises that smartphone users would stand next to the shops and check in, rather than actually go inside."
Shen said that enterprises are hoping to attract more customers through the scheme but such practices might discourage other businesses from taking part.
"We wanted to create a win-win partnership with businesses and donors, "she said, "We strongly urge donors to also support these enterprises."
